Support Cultural Programs of the NAS

Please support Cultural Programs of the National Academy of Sciences. Your gift will help showcase world-class examples of the work being created at the intersection of art, science, and culture. Your support helps us:

Bring together creative thinkers from the arts and sciences. In 2016 for the fifth year, DASER (D.C. Art Science Evening Rendezvous), a program of salons that promote dialogue between the disciplines of art and science, will continue to create a place for networking to foster creativity and innovation. Art and science will collide so that we can explore our curiosities about architecture, dance, fashion, and music while reflecting on contemporary issues such as climate change, environmental conservation, nutrition, and healthcare/wellness.

Organize art exhibitions that explore science. The NAS Building on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. has two intimate gallery spaces in which we curate exhibition that explore the intersection of art, science, and culture. From the fall of 2015 through the spring of 2016, CPNAS will host an interactive exhibition by architect Philip Beesley that explores futuristic possibilities of responsive architecture among other thought-provoking exhibitions.

Collaborate with local theater companies. Since 2009, we have worked with the Shakespeare Theatre Company to offer readings of classic plays with themes that are relevant to science. On December 7, 2015, we will collaborate with Tonic Theater, a company whose mission is focused on the intersection of science and theater, to offer a reading of "Moving Bodies," a play about Richard Feynman. Performed in the NAS's acoustically brilliant auditorium, the readings have been a great success due to the talented directors and actors of the D.C. region. Theater offers a platform for considering the cultural, social, and personal impact that science has on our lives. We look forward to continuing this tradition in 2016.
