Science and Art Deco

In celebration of the centennial of the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) Building, join us for a conversation about the intersection of science and Art Deco. Discover the pivotal contributions of astrophysicist George Ellery Hale, architect Bertram Grosvenor Goodhue, and artist Hildreth Meière in creating the NAS Building and explore how it and other Art Deco buildings embody themes of science and progress. The event features talks by Thomas Burnett, assistant director of communications, John Templeton Foundation; Steve Knight, president, Art Deco Society of Washington; Anna L. Kupik, president, International Hildreth Meière Association and great-granddaughter of Hildreth Meière; and Caroline Mesrobian Hickman, lecturer, School of Architecture, Planning & Preservation, University of Maryland. About DASER

DC Art Science Evening Rendezvous (DASER) is organized to explore several key questions: What are the relationships among art, science, technology, culture, and all related disciplines or systems of understanding? How do these disciplines relate to one another to foster creativity, innovation, and discovery? What are the tangible results of these interactions? DASER aims to create community and discussion around the intersection of art and science.

DASER is organized by Cultural Programs of the National Academy of Sciences in collaboration with Leonardo, the International Society for the Arts, Sciences, and Technology. The thoughts and opinions expressed in the DASER events are those of the speakers and do not necessarily reflect the positions of the National Academy of Sciences or of Leonardo.
